Research Abstract |
Much attention has been devoted to providing theoretical concepts and mechanisms designed to deal with Universal Grammar. An Optimality Theoretic approach is also one of the studies of Universal Grammar and various theoretical concepts and mechanisms are offered in the framework. Although the Optimality Theoretic framework provides an account for wh-movement and its epiphenomena, a straightforward explanation as to them is not offered. Furthermore, approaches to Universal Grammar based on detailed synchronic and diachronic study have not been discussed. The phenomena observed in complementizer system share common properties with other syntactic phenomena. To study these phenomena selectively can provide a straightforward account for the seemingly heterogeneous phenomena in the complementizer system. The aim of this study is to provide a systematic account for wh-movement and the related phenomena exhibited in the domain of a complementizer by making use of Optimality Theoretic constrai

nts. The constraints include the restriction on clause type, local syntactic binding, wh-operator, economy of derivation and representation, head, and traces. The interactions of the pivotal constraints can be extended to superiority effect observed in multiple wh-interrogatives, and the asymmetry between wh-extraction from tensed wh-islands and wh-extraction from untensed wh-islands. The proposed constraints can also take care of complementizer-trace effect observed, when an embedded subject undergoes wh-movement. The phenomena involving wh-movement vary from language to language, and so is acceptability of complementizer-trace effect. What makes things complicated is that interrogative patterns vary across the range of possible interim grammars in language acquisition. Whilst the facts lead the parameter theory and the Minimalist approach to be in quandary as to how to provide a unified account for those cross-linguistic variations, they immediately follow from the different ranking of the same set of the constraints presented.
