Research Abstract |
There are many ancient documents left today, treasured and taken care of in temples, shrines, old families, etc. They were selected to survive after they have done their job. On the contrary, much more documents were regarded not important, so they were disposed of. What is the difference between the two groups of documents beside "importance"? This is our question. We succeeded in collecting many shihai-monjO(紙背文書 documents once done away with, but later their reverse side utilized) from the Fukuchiin-ke Monjo(福智院家文書 Ancient Documents of Fukuchiin Family) at Kyoto City, in order to get some due for the problem. Shihai-monjo provide us with many hints on about what kind of materials we usually are struggling with.
