Research Abstract |
This is a practicing research by which the new experiential training program for peer support staff was attempted. Student volunteers to be peer support staffs in university were asked in 2005, and 8 Students entered a new training program for a year. Group-supervisions were done by author using their role play videotapes. All staff played both roles : the role of peer support provider and peer support user. Each session is taped, and Author supervised them watching the video. It promoted their autonomy and students developed their communications skills. The effects were confirmed through rating scale value of their skills in role play and their introspections. After the training, they began work as peer support staff and established the peer support system in university autonomously. They opened Peer Support Room once a week for a certain period of time of the day. Author oversaw their activities and conducted a regular case conference once a month. In 2006, few students used the service. They had just 8 cases. In 2007, they changed the style, made appropriated public relations efforts, provided the service in an open space, and opened the room everyday at a new school term. This change had worked, and they had 109 cases in this year. This program was useful as the method to train peer support staff. In addition, the improvement points of this method were discussed.
