Research Abstract |
This research project aimed to present and elucidate the conditions of school education in Naha, Okinawa, in 1947, in the main part through an examination of the documents which comprised "the day by day records of Tsuboya elementary school in 1947 (tsuboya shoto-gakko nisshi)". These documents escaped World War II damage and are all that remain of school documents in Naha from those days. These records are very valuable documents. They describe everyday details of what was happening in the elementary school under the terrible conditions existing right after World War II ended in Okinawa, before the government of the Ryukyu islands was formed, and before the 6-3-3 education system was introduced. The year 1947 saw Okinawa still suffering from the poverty and confusion of the war days. Teachers were struggling to make efforts to educate and create the best conditions for children. The documents tell us, for example, that students had to build their schoolhouse and construct a playground during their classes. From the fact that it is recorded that on one day the school received pencils and textbooks, we understand that the school had few resources even textbooks. On another day teachers received food and other goods as salary. From examining the records we see that compared to 1946 the situation had gradually improved. However, the documents tell us that daily school life was the result of the enthusiasm and strong will of the teachers, and their concern for the children who survived the terrible devastating war. With fully annotation and more detailed information by researcher including interviews of teachers and students related to that time, '"the day by day records of Tsuboya elementary school of 1947 (tsuboya shoto-gakko nisshi)" is now published by Institute of Regional Studies of Okinawa University.
