Research Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the potential of historical weirs as waterfront space. The characteristics of both spaces and activities of visitors were investigated in two cases, Ichinoi-seki, Kyoto, and Hata-seki, Kochi. One more case, Daiju-seki, Tokushima, had been investigated in advance. Spaces and activities of these weirs were compared. Differences of types of water-related activities existed among the threes. Size of the weir and overflow were thought to be the factors of the differences. Various sets of activities and spaces in terms of sections were extracted. The spatial factors for water-friendly activities came up from studying the sections. Those were accessibility from the banks, condition of floor, distance to water surface, conditions of riverbed, and depth and speed of water. The weirs have the potentials as spaces for approaching the rivers, experiencing being in the middle of rivers, recreating at the watersides, and contacting deeply with water.
