Research Abstract |
I investigated the situations and problems of building conservation in European countries, especially Britain. As the case study, I picked the Oxford Castleyard regeneration project, I examined various problems, and thought about British advanced system which relate to redevelopment and building conservation. The redevelopment of the Oxford Castleyard is practice of various new techniques of the town planning that Blair administration executed, and it is also conserving historic site including grade I listed buildings. In this project, the existing building conservation systems were effectively functioned, and it has been successful from the viewpoint of economic activation. However, on the other hand, a part of deregulation concerning a current change of the listed buildings was done for economic activation. Therefore, it seems to having some problems and it would be evaluated these points in the future. I also looked into the activities of voluntary groups for building conservation.

I visited the office of the SAVE Britain's Heritage which engage in activities of conservation in a positive way, and interviewed to the staffs. I heard the problems that the SAVE had faced now, and I arranged the activities and problems of the building conservation that Britain held. On the other hand, I also examined Japanese problems of building conservation throughout three cases, former Shimizu Kanzaemon's residence in Kozu-shima, the group of historic buildings of former Onozuka residence in Oyama city of Tochigi Prefecture, and the group of modern architecture in Moji and Shimonoseki district. The regeneration plan of former Shimizu residence is the project which conserves old domestic building and uses for new purpose. It is a part of activation projects of the island. I joined the project in 2005 when the old domestic building was dismantled, and had been thinking about the new usage of this valuable heritage in the island, with referring to similar examples in Japan and overseas. Former Onozuka residence was a group of historic buildings donated to the Oyama city just after the former owner's dying. I joined the building investigation whose purpose was assessment of the architectural value. And I examined the way of conservation using them positively. Moreover, I investigated the way of conserving modern architectural heritage in Moji and Shimonoseki district as an example of the heritage tourism that had already progressed. Less
