Research Abstract |
Our study is based on five points of view which researched in 2005 : endemism, ecological approach, cultural viewpoint and examination of soft material at zero gravity. We study these points on many terms of International Space Station (ISS), and make them into the three concept of "MA" : unique Japanese sense about spaces. The first general idea of "MA" is space of living. We analyzed narrow limited space or house with no windows. The second idea is time of living. We examined about an life cycle caused by irregularity of space time. And the third idea is space of human movements. We consider posture of floating : losing a sense of top and bottom, right and left. We correlate all ideas and studies mentioned above, and analyze elements of Japanese tea-ceremony rooms from ancient times, and make a concept of tea-ceremony room of outer space, which is a new style of living space. In 2006, we proposed 1/10 concept model of International Space Station (ISS) Japan module as "Flexible Afforda

nce" which is the environmental design at zero gravity. The module under construction consists of two cylinders which cross at right angles to each other. The longer one is 4 meters in diameter and 10 meters in length, and it is a living space shared by eight crews. Each of eight rooms is a private space of two-mat room's size, it means that we give them the same size as traditional tea-ceremony room. The other is 4 meters in diameter and 4 meters in length, and it is a tea-ceremony room for common use. It is a public space for feeling the spirit of tea-ceremony. Particularly about the theme "floating in zero gravity", we have to consider movements of human, and texture of surface to constitute interior, in outer space which has no exterior. In addition, this theme shows us the new guideline of design. The living space in outer space is different from our usual house which consist of floor, wall and ceiling. Besides thinking about materials, we have to consider mediums that conveys light, air, sound and so on. We applied the theme to another product "BIRD HOUSE", which is a perch for human. We assume that we use that device in zero gravity, and making a life-size model. On our research, we mainly presented concept model. And we propose to reconsider the meaning and function of tea-ceremony room, to examine human body in outer space, and to grope the ideal method of space culture. Less
