Research Abstract |
1. We undertook the field study of "Sbaek Thom" by visiting the performing group "Te Tian." In this study, the materials for the analysis were organized along with the records of the performance. On the basis on these, we analyzed not only the literary but also the visual and aural structure, in conjunction with the audio. Based on the knowledge received from the process of analysis and using the media art called Sbaek Thom, we composed and performed the digital shadow plays "Another Story of Ramayana," "The Battle in the Lanka Islands," and the audio-visual poem "Another Story of Ramayana No. 2."Throughout the performance of these pieces, we presented one aspect of the characteristics regarding Sbaek Thom. 2. In connection with the field study of Sbaek Thom, traditional Cambodian music was also considered. Analysis was conducted regarding the structure of each musical instrument, differences between various forms of ensembles, and the roles of each player in the ensemble. Consequently,

the study results presented characteristics of the original heterophony. Moreover, some new pieces have been composed, based on the outputs of the series of studies. 3. Regarding the development of the media arts pertaining to Sbaek Thom, an examination of the animation created by Norman McLaren and the digital picture books by Kveta Pacovska provided certain guidelines. In addition, a variety of contemporary media arts, the trial piece, and the experimental performance have been studied. The results indicate that expression in the media arts is closely related to engineering techniques. In addition, by utilizing these techniques, it is recognized that a fusion of visual and aural elements becomes possible. 4. The creation systems pertaining to images and audio have also been studied as regards realization. These studies can be independent by themselves, but by relating them to the development of media arts, in other words, by expanding the possibility of application, we are likely to stimulate further studies, in many aspects.
