| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In November 1918 the armistices signed by belligerent countries stopped the fighting in Western Europe. Even then they failed to pave the way to peaceful solutions in East-Central Europe, where collapse of the Russian, Habsburg, Ottoman, and German Empires necessitated a new map covering this area. Many nationalities were intermingled there, and national self-determination declared by Woodrow Wilson turned out to be a competitive game, which eventually led to armed conflicts. When the World War and the ensuing civil wars ended, the Habsburg Monarchy had been replaced by successor states which prevailed on its soil. Historiography has had difficulty in defining what they succeeded from the Monarchy because its description has been overshadowed by the catchword of national self-determination. Our study project aimed at rebuilding historiography of the contemporary East-Central Europe through revealing what successor states inherited from the Monarchy.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
1918－19年を分水嶺として、中・東欧地域には民族自決国家が成立し、それまでの「民族の牢獄」は解消されたという理解は「プロパガンダ」としては意味があったかもしれないが、この地域の歴史を理解する上ではむしろ桎梏となっていた。本研究は、この時期をまたいでの連続、非連続を問うことによって、断絶としての1918－19年理解を乗り越える方法を示すものである。本研究はその意味で決して網羅的な研究ではないが、新たな視点から見えてくる歴史事象との格闘の記録である。具体的には制度とアイデンティティと記憶（文書と文化財）との視点から連続、非連続を問うた。国際水準に見合った成果を出すことができた。
