Photocatalysts and photoelectrodes were developed for decomposition of an aqueous ammonia solution and reduction of nitrogen molecules using water as an electron donor of artificial photosynthesis. Ru cocatalyst-loaded ZnS photocatalyst with a wide band gap showed the activity for the decomposition of an aqueous ammonia solution under UV irradiation. Various metal oxide and sulfide photocatalysts such as NaTaO3:Ru,La and Cu2ZnGeS4 were also developed for the decomposition of an aqueous ammonia solution under visible light irradiation by applying our original materials for water splitting to the reaction. On the other hand, NaTaO3:Sr,Ba gave NH3 by N2 reduction without any sacrificial reagents, though we were not convinced that it was a photocatalytic reaction, because the amount of NH3 obtained was very small.
