| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In World War I, the first all-out war in history, the boundary between "front lines" and "domestic" was dissolved. In other words, the battlefield became infinitely more "domestic" than in previous wars. In the war of total war, civilians other than soldiers were actively involved in the war in one way or another, and they became "soldiers without arms. In this context, the killing of civilians also became a daily occurrence. In this joint research, we took up the major countries that participated in World War I and clarified what civilians thought and did in the midst of total war, and at the same time, we considered the impact on postwar European societ

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
共同研究の対象国として、ドイツ、イタリア、ロシア、ハンガリー、フランス、そして日本を取り上げた。これらの主要参戦国において「武器を持たない兵士」となった民間人が、4年に亘る長期消耗戦を戦い抜いた心理的背景や物的背景にあったものを明らかにしていった。同時に、総力戦を経験した民間人が、戦後の社会の変貌ー「暴力化」と「民主化」ーに如何に関わっていったのかを解明していった。その成果は、鍋谷郁太郎（編）『第一次世界大戦と民間人』（錦正社、2022年3月）の形で出版された。
