| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Principally based on the historical perspective, this project made a comparative research on eugenic thoughts and policy, focusing on European countries, the United States, Japan, South Korea, etc. Besides, through open conferences, it promoted enlightenment activities on themes such as the new type of prenatal diagnosis, taking into account the on-going trend of what is so-called "Neo-eugenics", inspired from the latest research of genetics and genome science.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
優生学にもとづく思想や政策は、歴史的にみれば先進国においてほ同時期（19世紀末から20世紀初頭）にかけて生じており、その背景には、当時の高度化する産業のなかで新たに必要とされるようになった労働をめぐる価値観の変遷が存在することが本研究によって示された。優生学が前提とする生命観は何ら普遍的なものではなく、特定の歴史状況のもとで生じた経済的・政治的状況によるものであることを示すことにより、今日にも続く優生学的な発想を相対的に捉え、その限界を見極めることが可能になるだろう。
