Outline of Final Research Achievements

We tested whether the culture (interdependence and independence) would predict the ability to down-regulate emotional arousal with LPP. Participants were shown a series of negative or neutral pictures. They were instructed to suppress or attend to their emotions (within participants). During the task, their electroencephalogram was recorded and analyzed. The late positive potential (LPP) evoked by unpleasant (vs. neutral) pictures (a marker of emotional arousal) was reduced in the suppress (vs. attend) condition. This effect of emotion suppression was more pronounced for Japanese than European Americans.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

負の情報へ行動調整傾向とは、負の情報への敏感性を促す性格特性である。自らの行動を柔軟に調整し周囲に合わせる傾向が求められる相互協調的な文化においては、こうしたネガティブ感情の制御は適応的になり得るであろう。北米において実施された同様の研究パラダイムにおいては、ネガティブ刺激に対しては脳活動で見ると感情制御ができていなかった。しかし日本人の参加者や、北米におけるアジア系参加者のデータにおいてはネガティブ刺激を実際に抑制できることが明らかになった。こうしたネガティブ感情に対する制御の文化差は、リスクが生じたときの社会・文化による反応を知る上でも大きな意義がある。
