Outline of Final Research Achievements

Previous studies have shown that irradiation of plant seeds with oxygen plasma has the effect of promoting plant germination and growth. In this research project, we investigated the mechanism of plant growth promotion and found that the main factor was the fluctuation of gene expression in plants due to reactive oxygen species in oxygen plasma, and that the gene expression fluctuation was explained by epigenetics.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

これまで,動植物細胞や微生物等にプラズマを照射することで新奇な生体反応や効果が見出されてきた.本研究によりプラズマ照射が生体に誘導する現象のメカニズムの一つがエピジェネティクスであることが世界で初めて明らかとなった.本研究により,プラズマ照射により誘導される生体反応は,遺伝子変異を伴わず次世代に遺伝しない一世代のみの現象であることが判明したことから,品種の保護が必要な植物の成長促進や医療応用にもプラズマを活用可能であることが示された.
