Outline of Final Research Achievements

We focused on porosities of porous coordination polymers as a platform for controlling dynamics of gas molecules. We developed high-resolution NMR to monitor static/dynamic structures of gas molecules. We attained "1. development of a sample tube for high pressure high-resolution NMR measurements", "2. finding unusually slow dynamics of carbon dioxide in pores", and "3. storage of carbon dioxide and methane controlled by molecular rotation".

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

配位高分子は、水素、メタンや二酸化炭素等の分離・貯蔵材や超イオン伝導体等への応用が期待されており、環境・エネルギー問題を解決する次世代の材料として世界中で注目を浴びている。しかしながら、従来の吸着機構(物理吸着・化学吸着)では、穏和の環境(常温常圧)での大量気体貯蔵は困難である。本研究によって、配位高分子内部の分子回転を回転ドアに見立て、ドアの回転オン・オフを制御することで、吸着させた二酸化炭素やメタンを細孔内に閉じ込めることに成功した。従来の吸着機構とは全く異なる吸着・貯蔵方法であり、新たな吸着材料の分子設計指針として期待されている。
