| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Today Birmingham's novels are rarely read though they had a wide readership while the author was alive. My research gave a reappraisal to Birmingham's novels. It investigated how his vocation as a Christian clergyman gave strong convictions to his novels and revealed how indispensable Birmingham's faith in "humor in despair" is for humans to settle conflict with others and to lead a meaningful life. Specifically, books on the First World War such as "Gossamer" (1915), "A Padre in France" (1918) and "Our Casualty" (1919) were being discussed.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究の学術的意義は、従来、批評家たちの間ではバーミンガムは深みのないユーモア小説家と捉えられがちだったが、本研究を通して、バーミンガムは戦争小説、ミステリー等幅広い作品を書いており、多種多様な彼の作品のうちには「絶望の中のユーモア」というべき深い意味を持つユーモアが見て取れることを実証したことである。社会的意義は、そのような絶望の中においてもユーモアを見出そうとする姿勢は人間が生きてゆくうえで重要な姿勢であることを示し、バーミンガムの作品の普遍的・現代的意義を明らかにしたことである。
