Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research project attempted to clarify mechanisms of educational inequalities (how the socioeconomic status of the family that one comes from is converted into her/his educational attainment) using various nationally representative data sets collected in Japan. During the period, four peer-reviewed articles were published in international academic journals as outcomes of this project. Moreover, a book that summarizes research findings regarding educational inequalities in Japan was written in Japanese and published for the general public.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

家庭環境によって子の学力や最終学歴に差がある「教育格差」は広く知られるようになってきた。確かに、親が大卒であれば子も大卒となる傾向がデータで確認できるが、これは自動的に生じているわけではない。実態と具体的なメカニズム(どのようにして出身家庭の社会経済的地位が児童生徒の学力、教育選択、最終学歴といった教育成果に変換されるのか)がわからなければ、教育格差の縮小するための政策議論をすることができない。そこで、本研究課題は、日本における教育格差の実態とメカニズムについて、研究期間内で可能な限り多くの観点で実証的に検討した。
