Outline of Final Research Achievements

We have found the neural progenitor cells, L1-INP cells, in the neocortex of adult rodents and marmosets. In this study, we investigated if L1-INP cells exist in the neocortex of adult humans.
The postmortem brains were provided by the Brain Bank for Aging Research (BBAR) at Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology. Using the neocortical areas from healthy persons, we examined the presence of L1-INP cells (n = 2), and found L1-INP cells in these 2 cases. To ensure the presence of the cells, in the future, it is necessary to continue to increase the number of cases. In addition, a similar analysis of the postmortem brains of patients with neuropsychiatric disorders will be added to clarify the correlation between neocortical neurogenesis and the diseases.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

これまでの研究において、げっ歯類やマーモセットなどの実験動物でのみ、L1-INP細胞の存在がわかっていたが、今回の研究によって、ヒトの大脳新皮質にもL1-INP細胞が存在する可能性が非常に高くなった。成体大脳新皮質の抑制性神経細胞の脱落や興奮抑制バランスの欠如は、様々な脳疾患と関係していることがわかっていることから、L1-INP細胞が脳疾患の細胞治療法に将来結びつく可能性がある。今後、健常者の死後脳とともに、認知症、特にアルツハイマー病患者の死後脳について注目して解析を継続していく予定である。
