Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purposes of this study are (1) to predict behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), (2) to determine whether essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (EPUFAs) improve BPSD. Action Observation Sheet (AOS) is a screening scale for dementia severity with family, caregiver and medical worker. It consists 47 items including cognitive and psychological/ behavioral symptoms. We investigate the short versions of the AOS, which consists 17 items, produced results comparable to those of the full version. Next, we conducted randomized control trial of omega-3 supplementation for cognition and BPSD. Duration of treatment was 3 months. A total of 8 patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) randomly allocated to two groups; omega-3 supplementation group and non omega-3 supplementation group. Supplementation with omega-3 did not improve cognition and BPSD.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
