Outline of Final Research Achievements

Growing evidence indicates an association between periodontitis and delivery outcome; however, the mechanism is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the influence of Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) infection on delivery outcome.
In the human study, lower anti‐P. gingivalis IgG‐1 amounts are related to threatened preterm birth, while higher anti‐P. gingivalis IgG and IgG‐4 are related with small for gestational age in threatened preterm birth.
A bacteremia model mouse was created by intravenous injection of Pg to pregnant Slc: ICR mice. Pg infection during the third trimester caused low birth weight and inflammation in the placenta and umbilical cord.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

早産・低体重児は新生児の疾病罹患率、死亡率を増加させる有害な病態である。また、胎児発育不全は出生後の予後が不良となることもあり、周産期死亡率や精神発達遅滞の発症率も高く、成人後も疾病罹患率が高いなど軽視できない病態である。
本研究はP. gingivalis感染が低出生体重児出産を引き起こすことヒトおよびマウスモデルで示した点が非常に興味深く、歯周病が早産・低体重児出産に影響を及ぼすメカニズム解明の一助となることが期待できる。
