| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The aim of this research is 1) to establish a database of the piano works played in class exams of Conservatoire national de Paris, from 1890 to 1954; 2) to understand the position of the French composers in the repertory. The analysis of repertory revealed two points: A) The Austro-German classical and romantic composers (Bach, Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Schumann), Chopin and Liszt take up a large proportion of the total number of composers. B) The percentage of French composers is less than one-eighth of Austro-German composers. Today's canon of modern French piano music (that of Faure, Debussy and Ravel) was formed gradually from the 1920s and 30s and fixed from the mid-40s, because of WWII. During the period between 1890-1954, only Saint-Saens’s works accounts for a high percentage among the French composers. Thus, due to a need to compensate for the lack of French classicism in music, the institutionalization of “French modern piano music” is constructed around Saint-Saens.

本研究では、20世紀前半のパリ国立音楽院で、どのようなピアノ作品が重視されたのかを明らかにしました。作成した定期試験演奏曲データベースは、だれもが検索できるような形で公開される予定です（公開時期・方法については報告書参照）20世紀の演奏レパートリーは、純粋な美的価値づけのみならず、戦争や政治的背景、産業など複雑な背景の中で形成されました。この背景の一端を、本研究の成果を通して知ることにより、現在私たちが教育制度の中で親しんでいるピアノ音楽がなぜ重視な地位を占めているのか、またなぜ、ある作品はレパートリーから外れていったのか、といった視点を提供し、演奏教育の規範を見つめ直す機会を与えてくれます。
