Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research project aimed at clarifying the position of Japanese folk song (min’yo) in Japanese life and figuring out the social network of amateur folk song performers in Akita prefecture by participant observation and interview.
This research obtains the following results; (1) Japanese folk song has been modernized as a stage performance also in Akita, (2) there is some diversity in the history and management system of folk song contests in Akita, (3) the beginning and motivation of singing Japanese folk song are significantly different between younger and older singers, (4) the node of a social network of amateur folk song singers seems local lessons they join, but it extends over other prefectures, (5) presentational performance seems prevailed in Japanese folk song, while participatory performance remains and they are practiced in a different type of “ba” (a place with agency).

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
