| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In order to elucidate the pedagogical value of so-called Sein (=freely distributed print) in early modern Japan, this research project consisted of the following tasks: 1. A comprehensive source survey. 2. Case studies of the Sein related activities of Kogaku Yuzan and Higaki Gendo. The first task has resulted in a provisional Sein catalogue of 297 items. The second task has yielded not only insight into the creation and distribution of Sein, but also into the particular significance of this medium to their producers. It appears that Sein were valued not only for their power to collect virtue and merit, but also as tools to gain recognition and fame.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究は、「施印」の作成・流通・意義を解明することを通して、従来、商業出版が提供する「有料」の「知」に依拠してきた教育史研究に、「もう一つ」の「知の伝達」システムの存在を明らかにした。情報が「有料」か「無料」のどちらで伝達されるかによって、その情報の質・量・流通・受容がどう変わるのかについて、今後の研究が無視のできない問題となったのである。これはアカデミアに対する問題提起であると同時に、インターネットの普及によって情報の「無料化」が急速に進み、学校や大学の「知」の独占が崩壊しつつある現在社会にも、今後の教育の在り方を考えるための不可避の視座である。
