Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study revealed the followings three facts. (1) Tanka gathering started to be held periodically at Kyusyu Ryoyousho, a public leprosarium, in 1924 and it spread to other public and private leprosaria in Japan. (2) In 1926, the patients of Kyusyu Ryoyousho published a Tanka and Haiku compilation and it got the readers outside the leprosarium. The Lepra Tanka boom reached its peak when Akashi Kaijin (a patient of Nagashima Aiseien, a national leprosarium in Okayama ) became a bestseller in 1939. (3)In 1932,the Queen Mother Teimei made a Tankia which encouraged people to help lepers in public Tanka gathering. Lepra patients expressed their gratitude to her by Tanka. Through these reciprocal transaction, outcasted lepers could become the subjects of Japan.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
