Outline of Final Research Achievements

This project aimed at exploring the way to avoid “over-consumed grandparenthood” drawing on data from cross-national qualitative surveys. Some of childcare support policies in Japan assume grandparents as childcare support agents, which might lead to “over-consumed grandparenthood” on the early stages of grandparent trajectory. Cross-national qualitative surveys conducted in this study indicate that giving social and cultural legitimacy to such grandparenting as doesn’t mobilize all social resources of grandparents to support parents in childrearing could be a necessary condition to prevent the “over-consumed grandparenthood.”

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

現在の人口学的条件のもとでは、祖父母―孫関係が30年以上に渡ることも珍しくはない。しかし成長した孫と祖父母の関係を有意味なものとする要素については、大規模データでgarndparenthood研究が行われている欧州や北米でも確立した見解は得られておらず、この点で本研究には一定の学術的貢献がある。また、仕事やボランティアを辞めて孫の世話のエージェントとなることは、孫が成長したときに、新聞でも報道された「孫離れうつ」のような、世話役割喪失がもたらすリスクがある。孫の世話をしながらも、孫が成長したときにも有意味な関係を可能とする要素を探る本研究課題は、この点において社会的意義がある。
