Research Abstract |
Study on physics education research (PER) has been carried out by the research group consisting of some twenty teachers in universities and colleges as well as high schools and an elementary school. They include, in addition to the investigators listed in item 8 above, Hidetoshi Yuguchi, Shuji Ukon, Shinichi Kishizawa, Toshio Ishii, Keiichi Dohi, Takahiko Horii and others. One of the main references for the study was the book, "Physics education with the physics suite" by E. F. Radish Emphasis has been on scientific approach to physics education reform, incorporating, for example, the recent outcome from the cognitive science research. This approach has been found to be particularly useful for our study aiming at mutual understanding and collaboration among physics teachers, because it provides viewpoints and languages encompassing a broad range of stages of education. The study has been focused on such topics as active-learning schemes, educational materials to promote self-motivated and interactive learning, and CADAA (computer-assisted data acquisition and analysis). The feasibility and effectiveness of adaptation of those methods into Japanese educational environment has been evaluated in their trial introduction in some Japanese high-schools and elementary school classes. Two members of the research group visited University of Maryland and Dickinson College for a few days each, to observe the PER based innovative educational schemes being conducted in those school. The visit turned out to be very fruitful in learning how the new physics education methods were performed in actual educational environment in USA. The reports on this study have been, and will be, presented at meetings of Japan Physical Society and in journals on physics education research.
