完全に規則的でも, また, 全くランダムでもない系の古典動力学, ならびに量子動力学の性質を調べ, 物理現象にしばしば見られる階層的なタイスケール発生機構, 動力学における多様性の発現過程を力学系理論に基づいて明かにした.特に, 自由度の高い物理系における量子トンネル効果の全く新しい側面を発見し, その解析手法を, 新しく発展しつつある数学を用いることにより確立した
