Research Abstract

平成18年度、19年度に引き続き、英語の史的コーパスを利用しながら、言語使用者の社会的要因を手がかりに言語変化のメカニズムを明らかにするという方法で研究を進めた。平成20年度は研究計画の最終年度に当たることもあり、3年間の研究の成果をまとめていく作業にも力を入れた。すでに中英語後期の『パストン家書簡集』の調査を通して、言語使用者の社会的地位、性別、生活環境などが言語使用に影響を与え、特にこの傾向が古い時代にはきわだっていることお明らかにしたが、このような単一の資料では、否定構文の発達、非断定形の発達、というような具体的で個別の現象についての調査では例文数が限られる傾向があることもわかった。したがって、20年度は、大規模な史的コーパスとしてThe Oxford English Dictionaryの例文データの調査に研究の重点を置いた。業績の欄にも示すように、否定的な意味合いをもつ動詞、たとえばpreventやdenyなどの史的発達の傾向を明らかにするにあたっては、The Oxford English Dictionaryの例文データは極めて有効であり、それぞれの動詞が取る構文が歴史的に変化していく様子を、文体との関連も含めて明確に示すことができた。
