Research Abstract

本研究の目的は、モダニズム期(大まかに1910 年代〜1970 年代)の日本におけるデザイン思想の形成過程を、輸出デザインの理論と実践、Gマーク制度の発足前後の国際的なデザイン問題、海外とりわけイギリスのデザイン論との関連性、から検証することであった。
国際性が特徴とされるモダニズム期を、国家の表象(ナショナル・プレゼンテーション)としての輸出デザインという「地域性」に重点をおいて、また国家間のデザイン論の交錯に着目して解明することにある。加えて当時の日本のデザイン活動を新たな「モダン・ジャポニスム」として捉える視点、その輸出政策について実際のデザインの図像分析を用いて質的研究を行う点、そして近代日本を国際的かつ視覚的にアピールしたモノの特性を需要と供給の両側面から解明する点、さらに、海外のデザイン論との関係に着目して解明する点、国家の表象に関して図像分析を用いて質的研究を行う点から研究調査を進めた結果、従来は見落とされていた輸出デザインとジェンダーの関連性に切り込むことができた。
また、『工芸ニュース』を創刊号より戦後まで調査分析し、「モダン・ジャポニスム」の議論に重要であると思われるテキストの抽出を行った結果、議論は3段階(19世紀的ともいえる伝統的造形をさらに追求する初期、日中戦争から第二次世界大戦直後までつづく「東洋的」日本趣味の造形を追求する帝国主義的デザイン議論、そして1950年代を中心に改めて日本的造形をモダニティのなかに位置づける「ジャパニーズ・モダン」の議論)にわけて把握することができると判明した。また、この間にさまざまな意味づけを与えられた「工芸」という問題を多く含んだ言葉の意味の変遷も同時に考察した。さらに、一連のモダン・ジャポニスムを考察する上でとりわけ代表的ととらえられるのが竹材製品であり、それにたいする海外デザイナーの関心という外からの働きかけをうけて、日本国内での議論が熟していった様子も解明できた。
