Outline of Annual Research Achievements

現在進行中の気候変化の環境下で、南極氷床がどのような応答をするのかについての知見を得ることは、科学的にも社会的にも重要な課題である。南極地域のデータの報告は他地域に比べると圧倒的に少なく、気候モデルへの制約データとなる観測値を得ることが重要である。本研究では、東南極の昭和基地周辺における氷床変動、そして西南極氷床の変動についての研究を実施してきた。コロナの影響で、分析や実験室での作業が影響を受け、研究の進行への影響が危惧されたが、9Beについての新しい高精度な分析法の確立とそれについての論文の発表を行ったほか、10Beの分析についても年度の後半に集中して実施することができた。東南極氷床は、氷床が全て融解すると全球的な海水準を50m以上上昇させるほどの淡水を蓄えている。直近の氷期が終焉した後のどのタイミングで融解を開始したかについての復元を行った。氷床の周辺に存在する湖の堆積物を用いた化学分析を行った結果、氷床の融解のタイミングが、北半球氷床の融解からかなり遅れて開始し、融解水が周辺の湖に流れ込んだシグナルがはっきりと捉えられた。このことはこれまでに報告されてきた内陸のシグナルとも整合的なものとなった。結果は国際誌にまとめ、すでに報告することができている。また、現在も融解が進行していると報告のある西南極のアムンゼン海周辺氷床の挙動についても分析を進めることができた。その結果、これまで知られていたメカニズムとは異なった融解プロセスが起こっていることが新しい分析で明らかになった。現在、国際誌に投稿準備を進めている。
