| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Through the heuristic concept of the Tokyo School, we could, to some degree, critically analyze the academic knowledge originating in Tokyo, which has been formed mainly at the University of Tokyo. With an attention to the dichotomies between modernity and premodernity, and between Japan and Asia, we clarified the position and issues of the Tokyo School in the fields of philosophy, sociology, economics, history, and literature. Finally, we discussed its formation by dealing with the transformation of each discipline in the prewar and postwar periods.
The research results were compiled in four issues of “Booklet Tokyo School.” In addition, through invitations to overseas researchers and a special issue of international journals, we were able to create a research platform for discussing modern Japanese thought.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
西田幾多郎らに代表される京都学派は国際的にも頻繁に研究対象に取り上げられてきたのに対し、東京学派は脱中心化されながら、日本社会全体の構造に浸潤してきたといえる。本科研の活動は東京学派の実態をあきらかにし、近代日本学術の経験を国際的に共有するとともに、この学派に対する批判的考察を可能とした点に意義がある。
くわえて、東京という都市を舞台に形成された近代学術の問題系を再評価することによって、学術のグローバル化が進む時代における学知の国際的かつ国内的なネットワークを明らかにする役割を明確にした。
