| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The mutual influence of Middle and Late Byzantine art (9th-14th centuries) and Italian art of the Romanesque and Gothic periods (10th-14th centuries) is discussed, especially in terms of church decorative programs. While one-sided influence from Byzantine to Italian art has been discussed so far, influence from Italian to Byzantine art has also been recognized in the Balkans.
The program of church decoration, which questions what kind of theological intention should be given to the placement of images in a three-dimensional church space, yielded concrete results regarding the placement of the "Ascension of Christ" and Old Testament scenes.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
中世イタリア美術史においてこれまで解明されていなかったいくつかの図像の意味が明らかになった。これらはある意味でルネサンス美術の基礎を形成するもので（特に「受難の聖母」図像）、ルネサンス美術（特にジョヴァンニ・ベッリーニやマンテーニャ）へのビザンティン美術の寄与が具体的に指摘される成果を得ることができた。
一方ビザンティン美術史の側では、イタリアからの影響によって解明された図像の細部があり、神学（東方正教とカトリック）と歴史学の分野にも寄与がなされた。
