| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
"Jige Monjyo" is a concept that comprehensively captures the group of documents transmitted by various strata of the region called "Jige". In this study, while examining document groups with different regions and Document holder, such as the family of the priest of Suwa in eastern Japan, the family of the manor viceroy of the Shikoku Mountains, and the family of large-scale farmers of Higo in Kyushu, we grasped the diversity of "Jige Monjyo" on a Japanese archipelago scale, and clarified the aspect in which the documents were accumulated and transmitted in the vertical and horizontal relationship of various hierarchies. In addition, by comprehensively collecting and analyzing data on "jigemonjo" and inscription historical materials in "kuni" units, we were able to clarify the state of written historical materials in the medieval "jige" society at each "kuni" level.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
第一の意義は、古文書学の枠組みを超えた文字史料研究の探究にある。本研究では、地下文書を上級権力の文書リテラシーが下降・変質したものとする見方を退け、文書を利用した当事者の視点から、地下文書の作成作法や機能のあり方を跡づけた。第二の意義は、紙の文書と銘文史料の統一的理解。両者の相互関係を追究することで、地下社会のメディアとリテラシーを総体として論じる道を拓いた。第三の意義は、史料論から見た中世における列島規模での地域間比較。今までの研究は畿内近国に偏っていたが、本研究では全国にフィールドを設定することで、地下文書の階層的広がりや、紙の文書と銘文史料の分布比率などの地域的偏差を浮き彫りにした。
