| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study investigated the process of formation, development, and transformation (decline) of the worldwide document network established by the Spanish Empire, which embarked on a colonization project from the end of the 15th century onward, and its reality in colonial society, from an interdisciplinary perspective based on knowledge from cultural anthropology, history, literacy studies,etc. In particular, this study focused on (1) the material aspects of documents produced and managed in the Spanish Empire, (2) the distribution process of documents produced in various regions and institutions under Spanish rule and the mechanisms that supported it, and (3) the roles played by various actors in the empire's peripheral world, in order to clarify the foundation of the existence of the modern empire from the perspective of document management practices.

スペイン帝国の統治原理については、これまで帝国史・国家論、経済史などの分野を中心に議論が展開されてきたが、そうした研究における関心の在り方は、いずれも国家レベルのマクロな公的制度の分析や組織論・言説論を中心に進められてきた。それに対し、本研究は、人間と文書メディアの織り成す実践と交渉の過程に焦点を当て、植民地社会におけるローカル・レベルの事例を踏まえたうえで、文書管理実践という微視的な視点から近代的集権国家・広域帝国の存立基盤にアプローチをすることにより、スペイン帝国の成り立ちをめぐる既存の研究に理論的・方法論的刷新をもたらす契機となった。
