| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
There are diverse understandings of social education among researchers. Broadly speaking, there are two mainstream understandings: a modernist understanding and a community-based understanding. This study explores the creation of a new theoretical framework and practice for social education that builds on the latter understanding, while overcoming the difficulties and challenges of contemporary society. Through empirical and comparative research with overseas counterparts, this study clarified that social education is closely linked to welfare. It also verified that the individual growth and development through learning activities is positioned in the process of achieving wellbeing in local communities. However, empirical comparative research on the connection between social education and preventive medicine is insufficient.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
社会教育は、広く社会において、学習を通じて個人あるいは集団が成長・発達していく過程をサポートしエンパワーする教育システムとしてとらえられてきた。第二次世界大戦後はこのような理解が多数を占めてきた。その特徴を示すキーワードは、自己教育、成人（個人）、発達、学習の自由、学習権、公的保障というような用語である。
このような近代主義的な社会教育理解を再定義し、コミュニティあるいは地域社会に深く根ざし地域社会のウェルビーング（福祉）を実現する社会教育の理論と実践の創出について提案したことが、本研究成果の学術的意義と社会的意義である。個人の学習を通じた成長、発達は、このような社会教育理解に位置づけられる。
