Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では「地殻生産プロセスの多様性と時間変動を制約するのはマントルの化学組成の空間不均質性である」という作業仮説を検証するため,海洋トランス フォーム断層の壁面が,過去1000万年から現在に至る海洋地殻~最上部マントルの連続記録であることを利用した観測を行う. 2020年度は,過年度実施したフィリピン海・南大洋データの解析を行い,インド洋マリーセレストトランスフォーム断層での観測を実施する予定であった.
1. フィリピン海のトランスフォーム断層および断裂帯を対象とした研究:四国海盆の海洋コアコンプレックス (Ocean Core Complex, OCC)の岩石試料および周辺の地球物理探査結果の解析をさらに進め,海洋デタッチメント断層の発達および背弧拡大末期のマントルの特徴が明らかになった.これらの結果は,複数の国際誌論文として公表した.
2. 南大洋バルカントランスフォーム断層のデータ解析:2020年度に実施された地球物理観測の結果の初期的解析を実施し,地殻生産量が数百万年スケールで変動していることを明らかにした.また,岩石年代決定を行い,時間変動の時間軸を正確に特定した.
3. インド洋マリーセレスト断層の観測:2020年10月に「白鳳丸」による観測を実施する予定であったが,COVID-19の感染拡大により外国港への寄港が不可能となり,航海中止が決定された.そのため,計画を変更して,インド洋の既存試料および上記2海域で得られた岩石試料に対し,多元素でより高精度の分析を実施することとし,その準備作業を2020年度に実施,2021年度に分析を開始した.

Reason

本研究計画では,インド洋マリーセレストトランスフォーム断層での観測研究を主軸とし,フィリピン海での海洋コアコンプレックスの観測,南大洋トランスフォーム断層での観測を併せて実施する予定であった.フィリピン海での観測は,計画以上の進展をあげ,国際誌への論文公表も進んでおり,南大洋の観測も計画通りのデータを取得することができている.一方,研究の中心になるはずのインド洋観測が,COVID-19の感染拡大により中止となり,本研究計画の年度内に実施できないことが明らかになった.フィリピン海等での観測をもとに,海洋地殻生産の時空間変動とその要因に関する研究は進展しているが,主たる観測が実施不可能となり,計画した研究を達成しているとはいえない.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

フィリピン海および南大洋の観測研究については,さらにデータ解析を進め,国際誌に公表する.インド洋データについては,既存試料の収集および分析技術の高度化を進め,可能なかぎり本来の目的である海洋地殻生産プロセスの変動の実態にせまる.インド洋観測については,次期長期観測計画に応募し,再度の機会をねらう.
