Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, we clarified the local and landscape environmental factors that enable both the sustainability of buckwheat pollination service and the conservation of the endangered species butterfly Plebejus argyrognomom inhabiting farmland landscapes. Semi-natural grasslands around farmlands were the important habitats for both buckwheat pollinators and P. argyrognomom. We revealed that (1) the spatial connectivity of the grasslands is important, (2) the frequency of mowing should be biannual, (3) mowing should be refrained during the larval stage of P. argyrognomom, and (4) mowing should be refrained for one month before the flowering of buckwheat. These management practices are likely to allow metapopulation persistence of P. argyrognomom and sustainable buckwheat production.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

農業生産と生物多様性の保全は、しばしば二律背反の関係にあるが、これを両立させることは、自然と共生する持続可能な地域社会の形成に不可欠である。本研究では、農地景観に生息する絶滅危惧種ミヤマシジミのメタ個体群の存続を可能にし、かつソバの送粉サービスの持続性を保証する景観管理の具体的な方途を提示することができた。この成果は、論文や各種講演会、新聞報道などを通して社会へ発信したとともに、営農組合への管理マニュアルとしての採用や、自然共生を実現する新たな任意団体の設立にまで至り、大きな学術的、社会的な貢献をもらたらすことになった。
