Outline of Final Research Achievements

In order to clarify the effect of nanobubbles (NBs) on promotion of seed germination and its mechanism, barley seed germination test was conducted. In parallel to this, reactive oxygen species (ROS, hydroxyl radical, ・OH) in NB water was tried to be detected by ESR method. Barley seed was used as a target seed sample and its seed germination was promoted stably when the number concentration of NBs was in the order of 10 to the 8th power. Adding to this, the parameter of T50 (time required to reach 50% of the maximum germination ratio) was revealed to be adequate for judging the promotion effect.
Finally, OH radical was detected by ESR method which means the mechanism that OH radical in NB water provokes the generation of super oxide radical inside seed leading to the promotion of germination.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ナノバブルはバルク水中のサブミクロンオーダーの気泡を指す。これを含有するナノバブル(NB)水が種子の発芽を促進し、s-shaped modelにより発芽過程のモデル化が可能となり、オオムギ種子では10の8乗レベルのNB個数濃度において種子発芽が安定して促進された。更に、個数濃度が高い酸素NB水でOHラジカル(・OH)の発生がESR法により捉えられたことで、・OHに起因して種子内のスーパーオキシドラジカルが誘起され、発芽促進に至るメカニズムが示唆された。
以上、NBの個数濃度を指標とした発芽促進条件が明確にされたので、現場へのNB水の適用が容易になり、穀物生産の向上に貢献できると期待される。
