Outline of Annual Research Achievements

今年度は、インドネシア技術評価応用庁(BPPT)の研究船 Baruna Jaya Ⅳを使用し、インドネシア多島海西部海域(スラウェシ海、マカッサル海峡周辺海域)のビトゥンからマカッサルまでを結ぶ測線上に設定した29地点において、海面から海底直上までの乱流集中観測を実施した。インドネシア多島海域を対象とした数値シミュレーションによって存在が予測されていた「乱流ホットスポット」を中心に、深海乱流計(VMP-5500/VMP-X)を投入することで、長年謎とされてきたインドネシア多島海西部海域における潮汐混合強度を定量的に把握した。すでに昨年度に実施したインドネシア東部海域での観測の結果とあわせると、インドネシア多島海全域における「乱流ホットスポット」でのデータを取得できたことになる。
また、上記の乱流観測にあわせて、電気伝導度・温度・水温計(CTD)、および、吊下型音響ドップラー流速計(LADCP)による観測を同時に行うことで、この潮汐混合によってインドネシア通過流(ITF)の水塊特性が変成していく実態と、その鍵となる海域を見出すことができた。さらに、数値モデルで強い潮汐混合とその時間変動が予測されている海峡部において、潮汐混合をはじめ、ITF、潮汐流、密度成層、鉛直シアーなど各物理パラメータの25時間にわたる時系列観測を実施し、潮汐混合を支配する物理機構の解明に繋がるデータの取得に成功した。
あわせて、ITFの出口にあたる南東部熱帯インド洋において2018年12月の白鳳丸航海で実施した観測結果の総合的な解析も進めた。

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

インドネシア多島海における数値シミュレーションで予測した潮汐混合強度と観測データの解析結果とが、海峡内を中心とした複数の観測点で一致しなかったため、これらの地点での潮汐混合の発生メカニズムの再考察が必要となり、究極的な目的としたインドネシア多島海内での乱流パラメタリゼーションの解明が遅れている。
また、昨年度からの新型コロナウイルス感染症の拡大により、追加観測など研究上必要なインドネシアとの往来が困難になったため、現地研究協力者とZoomなどを用いてやり取りを行っているものの、データのやり取りをはじめとして、情報交換にやや支障をきたしている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

今年度実施した観測データの解析から、インドネシア通過流(ITF)の局所的な水塊変質の物理機構について考察を進める。また、インドネシア多島海域における潮汐混合の定量化に向けて、これまで白鳳丸・Baruna Jaya Ⅳによる乱流観測で取得したデータの解析を続行するとともに、得られた結果を海洋大循環モデルや大気海洋結合モデルに組み込むことで、インドネシア多島海域がグローバルな物質循環や気候変動に果たしている役割について考察を進めていく予定である。
