| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The principal investigator discovered that the authors of two Ukiyo-zoshi works (“Saikaku Meido Monogatari” published in 1697 and “Kankatsu Heike Monogatari” published in 1710), whose authors were previously unknown, were written by Hojo Dansui, a disciple of Saikaku.
Taking the popular literature of the early modern period, especially up to the middle period, as an example, the paper investigates what kind of relationship did or did not exist between the historical fact of Japanese people's drifting abroad and the popular literature of the time, and how the image of foreign countries was formed and expressed by the Japanese people.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
西鶴没後刊行された浮世草子『西鶴冥途物語』には西鶴生前の俳諧に関する記述が多々あり、同じく浮世草子の『寛濶平家物語』には西鶴の『好色一代男』の挿絵を謗る文章があるなど、いずれも従来注目されてきた作品であるが、その作者はこれまで未詳とされてきた。本研究の成果により上記２作が西鶴の門人北条団水の作であることが特定できたことは、西鶴をめぐる今後の俳諧、浮世草子研究の進展のために特に重要な成果である。その他、本研究期間の成果を用いて、近世前期の漂流記と俗文芸との関係を明らかにしたほか、『仁勢物語』『吉原徒然草』『好色一代男』の解説を新見をもって執筆するなど、近世前期文学研究の基盤を整えた。
