Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research focused on the language and the narrative method of the Old English Saints’ Lives in a genealogical perspective. The original Latin version of the Lives of Woman Saints were received by English audience, firstly through the works of early Anglo-Latin writers such as Aldhelm and Bede, and later through Old English translations by the English authors such as Aelfric. In the process of translation, however, the texts were edited rather freely by the English authors. This means that the Old English texts are highly dependent on their authors’ treatment of the original texts. In order to clarify these authors’, especially Aelfric’s, attitudes towards the original Latin version, a close examination with diachronic and synchronic respect was made through the analysis of their characteristic language use for depicting the woman saints, based on the diplomatic parallel texts originally edited by the present researcher.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
