| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this generative-syntactic research I have studied syntactic determinants of scope of quantified phrases (henceforth, QPs) in English and Japanese. As one of the main achievements of this research, I have made a proposal on the way in which Objective Case and the semantic property called "presuppositionality" determine the scope of object QPs. In this proposal, I have compared the objects in English, Japanese, and Dutch, and accounted for the scope of Japanese object QPs by assuming a syntactic device that triggers movement of objects in Dutch. I have also considered syntactic determinants of external and internal argument QPs. I have focused on the syntax of passive sentences in Japanese, and accounted for the scope properties of the nominative subject in direct passives and the accusative objects in the possessor passive sentences.

本研究は，数量詞句の作用域という，ことばの意味に関する現象について考察を行い，それに関与する統語構造的要因は何かという問題を探る研究である。ことばの意味とはそれ自体で存在しているものではなく，文の構造により生み出されたり，意味解釈のしかたが構造による制約を受けることがある。このような意味と構造との密接な関係性について，数量詞の作用域という限定された範囲ではあるが，具体的に明らかにするものである。
