| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Based on our Japanese Common Academic Word Test, we developed two online tests: (a) a text-only test to assess sight lexical comprehension and (b) an audio test to assess aural lexical comprehension. These two tests enable us to examine disparities between sight and aural lexical comprehension.
We administered the two tests to Chinese and Korean students studying Japanese and compared the results. Students performed better in the text-only test, but disparities between sight and aural comprehension were more salient among Chinese students than their Korean counterparts. Further, Korean students displayed a higher correlation between aural and text comprehension, and their correct response rates in both tests were more parallel. Chinese students seemed to comprehend many words using their first language knowledge in the text-only test, though they failed to recognize those words aurally. For future research, we plan to elicit additional data from students of non-kanji backgrounds.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
学術共通語彙の理解は、日本の大学で学ぶ留学生には必須である。日本語の学術共通語彙は漢語の出現頻度が高いため、文字モードのテストでは漢字圏の学生が高得点を獲得する傾向にある。文字モードと音声モードのテストの開発により、学生にそれぞれのモードでの理解状況を示すことができるようになった。特に、漢字圏の学生は音声モードでの理解が不十分であることが明確に示せるようになった。
学術系の語彙は漢語が多く、講義やゼミにおいて、それらを正確に聴き取り、理解できるようにするために、音声モードによる学習・教育を強化する必要が高いことが示唆された。学術語彙を含む聴解やディクテーションなどが有効だと考えられる。
