Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study attempted to capture the actual situation of learning activities in which participants engage in collaborative activities, such as group work in a university English class, using the method of conversation analysis. By analyzing video data, we examined how participants negotiate to reach a unified understanding when they have different views on the content of the task or answers to the questions, or how they move on to the next question without reaching a common understanding. We were able to identify a variety of characteristics, including the timing and form of questions and their responses, linguistic expressions of how to present candidate understandings, linguistic expressions when proposing opinions, incomprehension of words and phrases and conflicting opinions, negotiation of attitudes toward the task, and orientation toward a common learning experience.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

一般的に学習は個々の学習者の頭の中で起きる個人的・認知的な現象と思われがちであるが、授業内でグループワークに参加する際には、他の学習者との協働の中で学習に取り組む。その中では、他の相互行為と同様に、参加者間の立場の調整が起き、一人で問題に取り組む際には見られない様々な現象が観察される。初等教育から高等教育までどの段階でも対話的な学びの重要性が意識されている一方で、対話場面に特有の、他者への配慮が学びの阻害要因となりうることに着目し、配慮が実際にどのような形で現れるのかを実際の録画データの詳細な分析に基づいて記述することにより、本研究は今後の様々な授業内活動をデザインするうえでの基盤を提供した。
