| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This longitudinal study investigates effects of intercultural experiences on English communicative competence and motivation. The findings revealed that pupils who had lived overseas consistently achieved high English communicative competence. Regarding intrinsic motivation, pupils with overseas experiences (living and travel) displayed higher intrinsic motivation than those with no overseas experiences in Grade 5, but this difference disappeared when they were in Grade 6.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究成果の意義は、小学校の英語教育において、異文化経験に関わる教育的示唆を得たことにある。具体的には、英語コミュニケーション能力の向上には、海外滞在経験が有効であり、どのような形態で児童が異文化経験を有するかが重要となる。一方で、内発的動機づけには、滞在や旅行といった経験の形態に関わらず、海外経験を有することで効果が見込まれる。ただし、児童が内発的動機づけを長期間維持することが難しいことも本研究から明らかになったため、定期的に異文化経験が感じられる活動をカリキュラムに取り入れる必要性を指摘することができた。
