| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study analyzes agricultural techniques based on organic fertilizer in Toyama and Ishikawa prefectures of Japan during the interwar period. Prior to the widespread use of chemical fertilizers, Japanese farmers employed organic fertilizers in a different manner compared to Europe. Firstly, they utilized human manure instead of animal manure. Secondly, they directly incorporated wild grass and straw into paddy fields, while also planting green manure such as Chinese milk vetch or legumes in specific regions. Finally, commercially available organic fertilizers, such as dried sardines or soybean cakes, played a significant role.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
有機肥料を集約的に用いた日本農業の分析は、世界の農業史研究に貴重な貢献をなしうる。Gudner, Larsen and Cunfer (2021) は、農民たちが、土壌の肥沃度（soil fertility）を維持しながら農業技術を発展させてきたことを明らかにしているが、その分析範囲はヨーロッパ、アメリカに限られている。本研究は、こうしたヨーロッパ、アメリカの農業史の問題関心にこたえ、日本の経験を提供する。今日、化学肥料の過剰投入は、環境悪化等の問題を引き起こしている。有機肥料に基づいて土地生産性の向上を実現した、我が国の戦前の日本農業の取り組みを解明することは、大きな意義を有する。
