| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
With regard to Max Weber's concept of "adequate causation," which has been variously interpreted in the past, we have provided a precise reconstruction of it by tracing it back to the original paper by Johannes v. Kries. By doing so, we were able to show that "adequate causation" is basically identical to the current statistical causal inference and to provide clear guidelines for the methodology of causal analysis in the social sciences.

社会科学、特に社会学における因果分析の方法論に関しては、長い間、かなり混乱した状態がつづいていた。「因果概念によらない」方法論を解説する論文や著書のなかで、著者自身が因果的な記述を行っていたり、あるいは、自然科学とは別種の因果特定の方法論があると主張されたりしていた。本研究では、社会学の基本的な方法論を最初に明確に定式化したウェーバーの議論にさかのぼることで、ウェーバーが導入した「適合的因果」が自然科学の因果特定の方法と同一であることを示した。それを通じて、因果的記述が根底的な事象記述の手法であり、それを避けることが現実的には不可能であることも示した。
