Outline of Final Research Achievements

We investigated the outflow mechanism of substances in the CSF from the brain. We established gold conjugates injection and fluorescein injection methods into mouse fetus lateral ventricle. The gold particle deposition was mainly observed in the frontal skull base. Electron microscopic study showed the deposition on the choroid plexus and ependyma in the lateral ventricle and also in the liver. By fluorescein injection with different molecular weight revealed that only small molecular size fluorescein can spread to extracranial space. This study indicated that the particles in the CSF were shown to move from the brain to the frontal skull base and also into the blood stream through the choroid plexus. The outflow of particles in the CSF may be regulated by molecular size and weight. The tract histology through frontal skull base should be disclosed in the future study.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

頭蓋内代謝産物の頭蓋外への流出に脳脊髄液が重要な役割をもっていることが近年注目されている。脳脊髄液の頭蓋外への流出路とその制御機構が明らかになることで、脳脊髄液動態をコントロールする手法の解明につながり、脳代謝産物の蓄積による中枢神経変性疾患や脳老化、水頭症、頭蓋内腫瘍の治療へと発展させることが可能となる。
