Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The "placebo effect" is a psychological phenomenon in which the efficacy of a drug is enhanced by conditioning such as expectation of the drug or experience that the drug has worked in the past. The placebo effect is more likely to appear in people with positive thoughts, and we focused on the possibility that differences in the secretion of chemical transmitters in the brain may be involved. In this study, healthy adults were given a verbal explanation of the anti-drowsiness effects of caffeine and then given a placebo. Many of them improved their sleepiness and also increased their brain activity. It was suggested that the placebo effect was related to brain activation. In terms of brain chemical transmitters, the placebo effect tended to be stronger in people with certain genotypes.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
