Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research project investigated various pieces of musical theatre written in Japanese in the first two decades of the 20th century, by close reading of the libretti and media coverage at their age. The works considered included (but not limited to) 1) the works of “new music drama” written by TSUBOUCHI Shoyo and his followers; 2) “actresses’plays” at the Imperial Theatre, which featured light-hearted Western songs and dances; and 3) pieces of musical theatre performed by the Takarazuka Girls’ opera in the earliest stage of its 110-year history. Previous research had overlooked such a treasure trove of unique pieces, focusing more on the attempts to stage Western opera masterpieces with Japanese-translated libretti. Nevertheless, those pieces of musical theatre written in Japanese from scratch played significant roles in the history of opera reception in Japan.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
